Where Ethiopia’s electricity comes from
More than 90 % of Ethiopia’s electricity is generated by hydropower plants. The largest of them, the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam on the Blue Nile, is the biggest hydropower plant in Africa with over 5 GW of capacity and was officially inaugurated in September 2025. Generation is growing faster than the domestic grid and demand can absorb, so the state utility also sells electricity to mining data centres.
For mining this means renewable energy with a low carbon footprint.
Climate and cooling
Much of Ethiopia lies on a highland plateau at around 2,000 metres, with a mild climate and no extreme heat. The lowlands, by contrast, are hot. Miners run in air-cooled halls, and standard air-cooled ASIC miners work reliably here.
Price and operation
Electricity in Ethiopia costs 1.84 Kč/kWh today excluding VAT, management of the machine included, and uptime reaches 98.92 %. You can see the current price in the overview above.
Where to place a new miner
For new machines we currently recommend other locations of our hosting. Countries with free capacity and today’s electricity prices are in the notice above, in the country overview below and on the ASIC miner hosting page. Not sure which to choose? Send us an enquiry and we will recommend a location based on the model and the electricity price.
FAQ: mining in Ethiopia
Why is cryptocurrency mined in Ethiopia?
Ethiopia generates more electricity from hydropower than it can use and offers part of it to mining data centres. Mining here therefore runs on renewable energy.
Can I place a new miner in Ethiopia now?
We currently don’t recommend Ethiopia for new machines. Please choose another location – the overview of countries with free capacity is on this page. We will gladly advise which one pays off best for your model.
How much does electricity cost on our hosting in Ethiopia?
Today 1.84 Kč/kWh excluding VAT, management included. For new machines, however, we recommend other locations with free capacity.
How do I access my miner and monitor it?
Through your client account at hosting.pcpraha.cz. It shows the performance of your machines, the coins mined and your payout history, and you send withdrawals to your own wallet from there – manually or automatically once a threshold is reached. On site, technicians look after the miner and repair any fault right in the data centre.
