Where Kazakhstan’s electricity comes from
Kazakhstan has large reserves of coal, oil and natural gas. Most electricity comes from thermal power plants, while hydro, wind and solar supply a smaller share. The country generates electricity mainly from its own resources, which is why it is among the cheaper ones in the region.
For mining, sites right next to natural-gas sources are of interest. There, gas is turned into electricity by gas generators and miners run in containers right next to them – without long power lines and without burdening the public grid.
Climate and cooling
Kazakhstan has a strongly continental climate: long, freezing winters and hot, dry summers. The cold months are an advantage for air-cooled miners, while in summer higher temperatures need to be taken into account.
