Where to buy a computer in Prague: what to look for

When buying a computer in Prague, what matters is not so much the shop’s address as what the seller does after the purchase: whether they test the computer before handing it over, how quickly they handle a claim and whether they have their own service centre where you can bring it in person. You can choose between large e-shops with pick-up points, specialist shops and service centres, classified ads and second-hand markets, or building your own machine. PC Praha is one of the options – we have our shop and service centre at Rostovská 260/2b, Praha 10 – Vršovice.
Summary
- First, be clear about what type of computer you are looking for. Office, gaming and workstation computers differ in price and components.
- Ask for a specific list of components, including the brand and model of the power supply, motherboard and SSD. “8GB graphics” or “fast SSD” is not enough.
- As a consumer you have 24 months to claim defects with the shop, and the shop must settle the claim within 30 days. When buying online, you can withdraw from the contract within 14 days.
- The advantage of a local seller is personal handover, a demonstration of the computer and a service centre you can drive to without sending a parcel.
What computer are you actually looking for
| Type | What for | What matters |
|---|---|---|
| Office | documents, spreadsheets, internet, video calls | SSD, 16 GB RAM, quiet operation; powerful graphics unnecessary |
| Home and multimedia | photos, films, music, the occasional game | small case, quietness, TV output, processor with integrated graphics |
| Gaming | games, streaming | graphics card, processor, quality power supply and cooling |
| Workstation | video editing, 3D, computation, AI | number of cores, large memory, professional cards, reliability |
If you are looking for a gaming computer, we describe how to choose the components in the guide How to choose a gaming computer. For a smaller budget, see the article The cheapest gaming PC.
Where you can buy a computer in Prague
| Option | Advantages | What to watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Large e-shop with a pick-up point | wide choice, fast delivery, 14 days to return when buying online | with ready-made builds, check that all parts are listed, including the power supply and motherboard; find out where claims are handled |
| Specialist shop or PC builder | custom build, advice from a technician, personal handover and on-site service | check how long the company has been operating, how it handles claims and whether it tests the build before handover |
| Classified ads and second-hand market | lowest price | unknown history; with a private seller, none of the consumer protection you get from a shop |
| Your own build from parts | full control over the choice, possibly savings | assembly and tuning are up to you, and you claim each part separately |
What to look for before buying
- Full specification. For a ready-made build, ask for the exact model of the processor, graphics card, motherboard, power supply, SSD and memory. An unknown power supply is often the weak point of cheap builds.
- Test before handover. Ask whether the seller puts the computer under load after assembly (a stress test of the processor and graphics) and checks the temperatures. When collecting in person, have it switched on in front of you.
- Warranty and claims. Under the Czech Civil Code a consumer has 24 months to claim defects, and the shop must settle the claim within 30 days. Find out whether the seller handles the claim itself or sends the computer on elsewhere.
- Service after the warranty. Cleaning the cooling, replacing a drive or upgrading the memory will come sooner or later. It is practical to have a service centre in the city where you can take the computer in person.
- System and licence. Check whether a Windows licence is included in the price or whether you get the computer without an operating system.
- Invoice. If you are buying for a company, ask for a tax invoice with VAT and clearly listed parts for your accounts.
Why not to build a computer without experience
Your own build can save money if you buy the parts at a good price and can handle the assembly. But the saving can easily turn into a loss. A common cause of a destroyed motherboard is bent pins in the processor socket after unprofessional assembly – the warranty does not cover such damage and you have to buy the board again.
The second problem arises when the build will not start. The parts come from several sellers and each one tells you the fault is not in their product. Finding the culprit then takes a lot of time. Anyone without experience will save time and nerves with a computer assembled and tested in one place.
