PC for Counter-Strike 2: requirements and builds for high FPS

Counter-Strike 2 will run on a modest PC, but for competitive play the processor is decisive: for Full HD and a 144 Hz monitor, a modern six-core, 16 GB of RAM and a card in the RTX 5050 or RX 9060 XT 8 GB class are enough. Valve lists only the minimum – Windows 10, a four-thread processor from the Core i5 750 up, 8 GB of RAM and graphics with 1 GB of memory and DirectX 11. For 1440p and a 240 Hz monitor, choose a processor with 3D V-Cache (Ryzen 5 7600X3D or Ryzen 7 9800X3D) and an RX 9070 or RTX 5070 card.
Summary
- Counter-Strike 2 replaced CS:GO in September 2023. It runs on the Source 2 engine and has higher demands – for example, 8 GB of RAM instead of 2 GB and 85 GB of disk space instead of 15 GB.
- Valve publishes only the minimum requirements. You have to work out the recommended build based on how many FPS you want.
- In CS2, the processor and frame-rate stability matter most. An expensive graphics card brings less than a fast CPU and a high-refresh monitor.
- You don't need water cooling or an extreme power supply. A quality air cooler and a power supply with good efficiency are enough.
What are the Counter-Strike 2 requirements and how they differ from CS:GO
CS2 is the successor to CS:GO on a new engine. That is why we compare the official minimum of both versions (CS2 according to Steam as of 10/2026).
| Parameter | CS:GO (original minimum) | Counter-Strike 2 (minimum) |
|---|---|---|
| OS | Windows 7 / Vista / XP | Windows 10 |
| Processor | Core 2 Duo E6600 / Phenom X3 8750 | 4 hardware threads, Core i5 750 or better |
| RAM | 2 GB | 8 GB |
| Graphics card | 256 MB, DirectX 9c, Shader Model 3.0 | 1 GB or more, DirectX 11, Shader Model 5.0 |
| Disk space | 15 GB | 85 GB |
The minimum only guarantees that the game will start. For a game where every hundredth of a second counts, you need significantly more.
How many FPS you need in CS2
FPS indicates how many times per second the image is redrawn. In CS2, it is not just about smoothness. The higher and more stable the FPS, the sooner you see an opponent peeking round a corner, and the smaller the delay between mouse movement and the image.
- 60 FPS – playable, but too little for competitive matches.
- 144 FPS or more – a sensible baseline for ranked and Premier with a 144 Hz monitor.
- 240 FPS or more – the level for demanding players with a monitor of 240 Hz or more.
The minimum matters too. When grenades explode, smoke and gunfire happen at the same moment, FPS drop the most – this is exactly where the difference between a weak and a strong processor shows.
Which PC for Counter-Strike 2: three builds for 2026
The components are available as of 10/2026. We don't list prices because they change very quickly due to the memory shortage.
| Build | Graphics card | Processor | RAM | SSD | What to expect |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Budget 1080p | GeForce RTX 5050 or Radeon RX 9060 XT 8 GB | Ryzen 5 7600X | 16 GB DDR5 (2 × 8 GB) | 1 TB NVMe | Full HD with competitive settings for a 144 Hz monitor |
| Optimal 1440p | Radeon RX 9060 XT 16 GB or GeForce RTX 5060 Ti | Ryzen 5 7600X3D | 32 GB DDR5 (2 × 16 GB) | 1 TB NVMe | 1440p for 144–240 Hz, more stable minimum |
| High-end | Radeon RX 9070 or GeForce RTX 5070 | Ryzen 7 9800X3D | 32 GB DDR5-6000 | 2 TB NVMe | 1440p for 240 Hz and more, streaming without losses |
Processors with 3D V-Cache (the X3D series) have a large cache, which generally helps in games. According to Tom's Hardware tests as of 10/2026, the Ryzen 7 9800X3D is the best gaming processor. The newer 9850X3D is only about 3% faster.
What matters most in CS2
Processor
At low detail, the graphics card waits for frames, and high FPS are determined mainly by the processor's core performance and its cache. If you have to choose, put your money into the CPU, not a higher-end graphics card. The processor is often the slowest part of weaker builds.
Graphics card
For competitive settings in Full HD, an entry-level gaming card is enough. A stronger card comes into its own at 1440p, at higher detail and with a 240 Hz monitor. CS2 needs little video memory; 8 GB is plenty for this game.
Memory, storage and cooling
Valve lists 8 GB, but with Discord, a browser and Steam, a sensible baseline is 16 GB in two modules. Keep the game on an SSD – maps load faster. CS2 doesn't load the computer as much as demanding open-world games, so a good air cooler and a case with reasonable airflow are enough for cooling.
How to set up CS2 for higher FPS
- Turn on Boost Player Contrast. Opponents' characters stand out better against the background.
- Turn off vertical sync (Wait for Vertical Sync). With a G-Sync or FreeSync monitor, cap FPS slightly below the refresh rate, or leave them uncapped.
- Turn on NVIDIA Reflex (on NVIDIA cards). It reduces the latency between clicking and firing.
- Set shadows (Global Shadow Quality) to low or medium and dynamic shadows to sun only. Opponents' shadows can give away their position, though, so don't turn them off completely.
- Lower model and texture detail, shader detail and particle detail to low. Turn off ambient occlusion.
- Leave FidelityFX Super Resolution off – it blurs the image. Only use it if FPS really aren't enough.
- Choose MSAA anti-aliasing according to performance: 4× is a compromise between sharpness and FPS; on weaker builds, turn it off.
