Firmware and software for ASIC miners: an overview

Every ASIC miner has its own firmware – a small Linux system with a mining program and a web interface through which you set the pool and monitor hashrate and temperatures. The stock firmware is enough for most people. Alternative firmware such as Braiins OS, VNish or LuxOS adds chip tuning and eco modes for a fee of 2–2.8% of hashrate. For dozens of machines, a farm manager such as Awesome Miner or Hive OS comes in handy.

What runs inside the miner

The control board runs a lightweight Linux and within it a mining program that distributes work to the chips and sends results to the pool. Programs such as CGMiner or BFGMiner, which you will find in older overviews, are the mining programs themselves – with an ASIC miner you do not install them on a computer; the mining program is part of the firmware. You connect to the miner from a browser via its IP address; no app is needed. The procedure is described in the guide How to connect an ASIC miner.

Stock or alternative firmware?

Firmware Fee Supported machines Main benefit
Stock (Bitmain, MicroBT, Canaan…) 0% machines from that manufacturer stability, signed firmware, manufacturer's warranty
Braiins OS 2–2.5% Antminers from the S9 to the S21 series incl. Hydro and immersion per-chip tuning, target power setting, Stratum V2
VNish 2–2.8% depending on the model Antminers S9–S21, some Whatsminers, Scrypt L3+, L7, L9 tuning profiles, disabling faulty chips without dropping the board
LuxOS 2.8% Antminers of the S19 and S21 series chip tuning, quick power reduction based on the electricity price
Hiveon ASIC according to Hiveon's current terms selected Antminers (S9–S21, T21, L7) integration with Hive OS web monitoring

The alternative firmware fee is paid in hashrate: for part of the time the miner mines to the firmware author's account. It pays off when tuning improves efficiency by more than the fee takes. This is typical with expensive electricity or when running in eco mode – see ASIC power consumption and J/TH.

What to watch out for

  • Warranty: the manufacturer may refuse to repair a machine with unofficial firmware. On a machine under warranty, better not change the firmware without consulting the seller.
  • Blocked installation: on some Antminers from 2024–2025, Bitmain has reportedly restricted the installation of third-party firmware. Installation is then only possible via the firmware author's tools.
  • Fake versions: download firmware only from the author's official website. “Free” versions with a hidden fee circulate on look-alike domains.
  • Test on one machine: try a new firmware version on one miner first, and only then on the whole farm.

Programs for managing multiple miners

Tool What it is for
Manufacturers' tools (Bitmain IP Reporter, MicroBT's tool for the IPFOUND button) find the IP addresses of miners on the network
Braiins Toolbox and Braiins Manager bulk installation and configuration of Braiins OS, monitoring across multiple sites
Awesome Miner management of over 200 ASIC models (Antminer, Whatsminer, Avalon, Goldshell…), automatic restarts and shutdowns based on the electricity price
Hive OS web monitoring, pool management and restarts; a client for stock and its own firmware

Why it matters for miners

Software decides two things that directly affect earnings: efficiency and downtime. A well-configured eco mode lowers the electricity bill, and alerts for high temperature or a drop in hashrate save days when a fault would otherwise go unnoticed. Overclocking ASICs goes in the opposite direction, raising hashrate at the cost of higher consumption and wear.

Frequently asked questions

Will I lose the warranty if I install Braiins OS or VNish?
It can happen – the manufacturer may refuse to repair a machine with unofficial firmware. Do not change the firmware on a machine under warranty without consulting the seller.
Is alternative firmware with a fee worth it?
Only when chip tuning improves efficiency by more than the 2–2.8% fee takes. That tends to be the case with expensive electricity or in eco mode.
Do I need a program on my computer for an ASIC miner?
No, you configure the miner in your browser via its IP address. Management programs are useful once you have more machines.
How do I update an ASIC miner's firmware?
Download the file for the exact model and control board type from the official website and upload it in the web interface. Do not switch the machine off during the update.
