How to quieten an ASIC miner at home: soundproof box and quiet miners

Nový ASIC Miner Box: Revoluční řešení pro tichou domácí těžbu kryptoměn

A typical ASIC miner runs at around 75 dB, as loud as a vacuum cleaner – it cannot be operated in a living space without modifications. At home you have two options: choose a machine built for the home with a noise level of 40–55 dB, or put a large machine in a soundproof box in a garage or cellar. Don't expect complete silence – a miner needs airflow and the heat has to go somewhere.

Summary

  • Noise is measured in decibels (dB). We perceive a difference of 10 dB roughly as twice the loudness, so 75 dB is about four times louder than 55 dB.
  • Quiet home miners run at 40–55 dB according to their manufacturers, some even less in night mode.
  • The PC Praha soundproof box is our own product. With small “box”-type machines, we achieved 45–55 dB with soundproofing.
  • The box must have an intake for cool air and an exhaust for warm air. A large ASIC produces 3–4 kW of heat.
  • The only completely noise-free option at home is to have the machine run in hosting.

How loud an ASIC miner is compared with everyday sounds

Noise level For comparison Typical miner
30–35 dB a whisper, a quiet bedroom at night Avalon Mini 3 in night mode (approx. 33 dB)
40 dB a quiet library Fluminer L2
45–50 dB a quiet office, a fridge VolcMiner D1 Mini, ElphaPex DG Home 1, hydro machines
55 dB a subdued conversation Avalon Mini 3 at full power
75–80 dB a vacuum cleaner, a busy street Antminer S21, L9, KS7 and other air-cooled machines

Decibels don't add up in the usual way: two identical machines side by side are 3 dB louder than one. Outdoors, the noise level falls by roughly 6 dB with every doubling of distance. Indoors, sound reflects off the walls, which is why absorbing it at the source helps most.

Quiet miners for the home

If you want to mine right in your flat, the easiest option is to choose a machine designed for it. We calculate earnings as hashrate × today's earnings per unit (Bitcoin 0,84 Kč per 1 TH/s, Litecoin + Dogecoin 10,60 Kč + 1,86 Kč per 1 GH/s). The amounts apply at today's difficulty and exchange rate, as of 18 Oct 2026.

Miner Coin Hashrate / power Noise Gross earnings per day Consumption per day
Fluminer L2 LTC + DOGE 1.2 GH/s / 240 W 40 dB ≈ CZK 15 5.8 kWh
VolcMiner D1 Mini LTC + DOGE 2.2 GH/s / 506 W 45 dB ≈ CZK 27 12.1 kWh
ElphaPex DG Home 1 LTC + DOGE 2.1 GH/s / 630 W 50 dB ≈ CZK 26 15.1 kWh
Canaan Avalon Mini 3 BTC 37.5 TH/s / 800 W 33–55 dB depending on mode ≈ CZK 31 19.2 kWh
Canaan Avalon Q BTC 90 TH/s / 1,674 W manufacturer does not state dB; has an Eco mode ≈ CZK 76 40.2 kWh

At a typical household electricity price (for example CZK 5/kWh), these machines lose money on their own. They make sense where you use the heat: the Avalon Mini 3 is also a direct heater and during the heating season replaces electric heating you would be paying for anyway. You will find a calculation including heating in our article heating with an ASIC miner, and more machines in the collection quiet miners for home mining.

The PC Praha soundproof box

You cannot quieten a large air-cooled ASIC in a flat, but you can in a garage, workshop or cellar. That is why we make our own soundproof box – designed and built in Prague. Inside are sound-insulating materials that absorb fan noise, and the box is designed so that the miner gets enough air and does not overheat.

With small “box”-type machines, our soundproofing achieved levels of 45–55 dB, a level at which the machine can be run even in an office. With large machines at 75–80 dB, the box reduces noise significantly, but it won't turn a garage into a bedroom – bear this in mind when choosing the location. We have also launched a separate website, MinerBoxes.com, for noise solutions.

We show how to prepare the box, put a miner in it and start mining in this video (in Czech):

How to place and connect the box

  1. Choose a non-residential space: a garage, workshop, cellar or plant room. A temperature of 10–25 °C and dry air are ideal.
  2. Provide an intake for cool air and an exhaust for warm air to the outside, for example via ducting to a window or through the wall. Without an exhaust, the room will overheat within hours.
  3. Place the box on a solid base, not on a carpet, and away from flammable materials.
  4. For a machine drawing 3–4 kW, provide a dedicated electrical circuit and a quality cable with a 16 A C19 connector. Leave the circuit design to an electrician.
  5. Put the miner in the box as shown in the video, and connect the network cable and power.
  6. After start-up, monitor the hash board temperatures in the miner's interface. If they rise above the factory limits, improve the air exhaust.

Other ways to reduce noise

  • Underclocking: lower hashrate means less heat and slower fans. We describe how to do it and the risks in our article overclocking and underclocking ASICs.
  • Water cooling: hydro machines run at around 50 dB, but need a water circuit, a pump and an outdoor cooler that has its own fans.
  • Don't swap the fans for weaker ones: quieter but weaker fans will overheat the machine and may damage the hash boards.
  • Hosting: 0 dB at home. The machine runs in a data centre and you just watch the earnings.

Frequently asked questions

How many decibels does a typical ASIC miner produce?
Air-cooled machines such as the Antminer S21 or L9 run at around 75 dB, some up to 80 dB. That is like a vacuum cleaner running non-stop.
Which ASIC miner is the quietest?
From our range, the Fluminer L2 at 40 dB and the Avalon Mini 3, which runs at around 33 dB in night mode. You pay for the quietness with lower hashrate.
Can I put a soundproof box in a flat?
For small machines, yes; for large ASICs, no. A box reduces noise significantly, but a 3–4 kW machine needs heat extraction and belongs in a garage, workshop or cellar.
Can I replace the fans with quieter ones?
We do not recommend it. Weaker fans cannot remove the heat, the machine overheats and the hashboards risk damage.
How can I mine with no noise at all?
The only way is to run the machine away from home, for example in hosting at a data centre. Then you have no noise or heat to deal with at home.
