What the Antminer X9 was
The Antminer X9 was meant to be Bitmain's first ASIC miner for Monero (XMR), with a hashrate of 1 MH/s on the RandomX algorithm – roughly five times more than the older Antminer X5 with 212 KH/s. Bitmain opened orders on 26 December 2025 and planned deliveries for July 2026. However, not a single unit ever reached customers.
- Algorithm: RandomX (Monero)
- Announced hashrate: 1 MH/s (1,000 KH/s)
- Announced power draw: 2,472 W (some sources state up to 2,500 W)
- Efficiency: approx. 2.47 J/KH
- Noise: approx. 76 dB
- Power supply: 220–277 V
- Weight: 17.5 kg
These are the specifications announced before the cancellation. The machine was never shipped, so they cannot be verified in operation.
What happened
In mid-May 2026, resellers began informing pre-order customers that Bitmain had cancelled the model. Deposits were refunded before the first units were delivered. Bitmain issued no official press release and has not publicly explained why – the information comes from resellers and the Monero community. According to market reports, it hinted that the X9 will be replaced by another model, but no specifications, price or date have been announced. Why ASIC miner pre-orders are risky in general is explained in our article on the risks of miner pre-orders.
What to do instead
Monero uses the RandomX algorithm, which is deliberately designed to run best on ordinary processors (CPUs). That is why Monero today is mined mainly on CPUs, and you should check the returns for your processor in a pool calculator. The background is summarised in the article Zcash and Monero vs. bitcoin.
